Field notes

A slower way to see the state.

A collection of small observations for people drawn to Florida’s wilder edges.

Florida pine flatwoods trail in early morning light

First light

The trail before the trailhead fills.

At daybreak, the forest feels newly made. The light catches on palmetto blades, birds move before the heat arrives, and a familiar path becomes something else entirely.

That is often the best time to begin: early enough to hear the place waking up.

01

Watch the waterline

Florida’s edges are always in motion. A little patience reveals where land gives way, who lives there, and how the day is changing.

02

Leave the headphones home

Bird calls, wind in sawgrass, and the soft work of water are part of the reason to be outside.

03

Notice what is small

The detail is the destination: a fern unfurling, a dragonfly landing, the pattern of cypress knees in shallow water.
